I woke up in my own bed, wearing the uniform still, but the vest and the boots were off me, lying innocently by the bed. Shade wasn’t there, though.

I searched every corner for a flower like a damn lunatic, but it wasn’t there, either. He hadn’t left me a tulip, and I had no clue why that was so damn disappointing.

Then I remembered.

I remembered everything, but most importantly, I remembered that I’d slept, and I hadn’t had any dreams of past times and strangers, and I hadn’t had any nightmares, either. The masked guys hadn’t come for me at all last night, which had happened plenty of nights before, but I hadn’t slept like that.

God, I hadn’t slept for real like that for over a month now, and I felt great. Shit, I felt like I could run a marathon, climb a fucking mountain, then shower, get dressed and go downstairs in time for breakfast. The smile on my face proved it. The warmth against my skin reminded me—the Void. Shade had been here, and I had no clue how long he’d stayed, but he’d been here, and he’d wrapped me up in his darkness and I’d slept better than I had in what felt like my whole entire life.

I took my toiletries and went to the bathroom, which was the last door on our side of the hallway, half hidden behind the corner. It wasn’t fancy but it was spacious, and it had working showers and warm water and fluffy towels that smelled like jasmine, and plenty of space for all three of us. Two.

It had space for the two of us now—Erica wasn’t here anymore.

The ladies’ room was separate from the men’s. I was alone when I showered, but when I came out wrapped in my towels, I found Marie brushing her teeth near one of the five sinks. She barely acknowledged me as I picked up my brush and toothpaste to go do the same.

Then…

“What did you do?”

I looked up at her through the long mirror that was mounted to the wall in front of the sinks.

“What?”

“What did you do?” Her eyes analyzed my face slowly. “You look…okay.”

Well, shit. “Thanks. I slept.”

She raised a brow like she found that hard to believe. “Yeah, right. Did you manage to make the Liqo Robore?”

“The what?” What the hell was that?

She turned to me, hand on her hip. “Don’t lie to me, Sera. Did you make it?”

I shook my head, foam still in my mouth. “I literally have no idea what that means.”

For a second, she just looked at me like she was measuring the truth of my words. “Damn it,” she then said and turned to the sink to rinse her mouth.

I did the same. “What’s a Liqo…what?”

“Robore,” she said, looking at me through the mirror. “Liquid strength.”

She had to be joking. “Liquid strength? You mean like—”

“Literally like Redbull on steroids—or cocaine—but without the side effects,” she said, brushing her hair next. It looked flawless, same as mine, because of the meredines Professor Satis made us use every week.
